The Almond Blossom Fest has been held in Agrigento for 73 years. The traditional event celebrates the arrival of spring marked by the blossoming of almond trees.
The initiative aims to enhance the artistic expressions that belong to the cultural tradition of the peoples and, in particular, those events that have been recognized by UNESCO as a “heritage of humanity“.
In this way we intend to create an ideal link between the material heritage represented by the archaeological area of the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento, which was recognized by UNESCO in 1997 and which in 2015 was declared “of exceptional value for humanity”, and the intangible heritage, in particular in relation to the expressions of the performing arts.
From 2017 the festival is organized by the Archaeological and Landscape Park of the Valley of the Temples in collaboration with the Municipality of Agrigento.
The Park pursues the goal of an integral recovery of the magnificent secular, natural and archaeological context of the Valley of the Temples, combined with the strong demand for community involvement in the virtuous process of participation in the heritage.
The need for inclusion is at the center of the cultural proposal that is inspired by the Public Archeology, ie openness and sharing, intended on a double level, that of the local community and the universal one, sanctioned by the belonging of the Valley of the Temples to the cultural heritage of humanity.
This through the implementation of good practices able to promote the dissemination of the cultural values that bring the landscape, the protection and enhancement of the expressions of local history, also in relation to the quality of life and economic development.
The 73rd edition will be held from 2 to 11 March 2018 and will include 20 UNESCO intangible heritage, 7 groups of children in the world, bands, more than a thousand guests, talks, events, educational workshops, exhibitions, concerts, cooking shows, parades, marches, Sicilian dances, shows for adults and children.
